ADDRESSES
Few more pointers:
Most letters to the press require an address and phone #.. They will not
print your letter without it
The word count for most is, 200 max. As far as I'm aware. Some papers
have a slightly larger word max - 250, 300. But best to stick within 200 to
ensure printability. Any letter that is 400 or more - best to break it down
into two separate letters.
Ok, that it. Let's get those letters out there.
Kate.

If anyone is writing letters regarding the recent developments here are
the contact lists again. Even if you only have time to forward the open
letter to the UN/UNESCO and the MEPs letter to a few random contacts it will
be spreading the word. The newspaper contact list is the one originally
posted by Kate Russell with a few 'failed' ones taken out and I have added
some more Irish ones at the end.

LETTER TO EUROPEAN UNION
Have received an e-mail from Kathys office enclosing this the text of the
covering explanatory note to go with the MEPs letter.
As Kathy says-
allow the public to see the letter. Only two papers have printed it in
Ireland and The Irish Post in UK. We need to send it to Political Parties and
local press and press in USA etc.....its up to you all....Pat;

To Whom It May Concern,
Today further destruction
will occur of the ancient amphitheatre at Lismullen. I would like
further attention on the issue in the hope that we can still save what is
left of this important archaeological monument.
The following letter
was drawn up to obtain attention on the European level. In one day I was
able to collect these signatures in the European Parliament by Irish and
other European members of Parliament who were outraged at the usage of EU
funds for the destruction of European heritage.
There was a great
willingness to support the campaigns to save the Tara-Skryne valley. In
order to focus the urgency of the situation, I would ask you to allow the
public to see this letter. Below are the signatures of the MEPs who have
showed their support by signing it.
Thank you for your co-operation
at this critical moment.
Kathy Sinnott, MEP for Ireland South.

The
Tara landscape is one of Ireland's and Europe's most precious historical
archaeological sites which is currently in the process of being destroyed to
facilitate the construction of a motorway. The European Commission has warned
the Irish government that its plans to build the M3 four-lane motorway
through the archaeologically rich Tara-Skryne valley are illegal within
European law. The commission is taking proceedings against the Irish
government. The landscape of Tara was this year placed on the World
Monuments Fund of most endangered sites. We are also aware of a joint
letter signed internationally by over 300 academics stating that the royal
estate of Tara is not just a central part of Irish heritage but is
significant on a world heritage scale. We, the undersigned Members of The
European Parliament, are alarmed at the Irish government's destruction in
July 2007 of the large early medieval settlement site at Baronstown in the
Tara-Skryne valley. This important archaeological site was demolished by
motorway construction workers in the middle of the night. We also express
our deep concern about the future of the Celtic temple at Lismullen, a site
with national monument status which is also planned to be demolished by the
Irish government. Urgent action is needed to urge the Irish government to
prevent the destruction of more of our common European heritage. As was the
case at Baronstown, and as is planned for Lismullen, thousands of years of
our shared European culture can be wiped out in a few hours and, once gone,
can never be replaced. Given that the path of the planned M3 is so rich in
archaeological monuments, we strongly urge the Irish government to alter the
current motorway route and to choose from the other available routes
and viable options for the M3 motorway, balancing progress
with conservation. It is of the utmost importance that steps be taken to
prevent destruction of any further ancient monuments which are part of
our shared European heritage. The Tara landscape should be preserved
intact as the European cultural and heritage treasure that it so clearly
is. Ireland: Kathy Sinnott Mary Lou McDonald Marian Harkin Northern
