Earth Hour
From Wikipedia

Earth Hour is an international event organised by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), and held on the last Saturday of March each year, which asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. Earth hour was conceived by WWF Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights.[1] Following Sydney's lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008. In a similar but unrelated happening, Thai businesses and households simultaneously turned off just one light during their fuel crisis in 2005.

Earth Hour will next take place on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm, local time.

Turn Off Your Lights: Earth Hour-a global event Wednesday March 25, 2009

ART earth-day.jpgOn Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 8:30 p.m. EDT, I am taking part in Earth Hour-a global event in which millions of people will turn out their lights to make a statement of concern about our planet and climate change.

I invite you to join, too!
Sponsored by World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour got started just two years ago and is now the largest event of its kind in the world. Last year, more than 50 million participated and the lights went out at the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Sydney Opera House and the Coliseum in Rome, just to name a few (I turned mine out too). Even Google's homepage went black for the day! In Israel, President Shimon Peres personally turned off lights in Tel Aviv.

This year, Earth Hour will be even bigger-already 250 cities in 74 countries have agreed to take part including Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami and Nashville with more signing up every day. Around the world cities like Moscow, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Shanghai and Mexico City will turn out their lights.

But Earth Hour isn't just for big cities-anyone can participate. To get a better sense of the event, check out this video.

Participating in Earth Hour is easy, fun and free. I hope you will join me for this amazing event. To sign up, visit Earth Hour where you'll learn more including ways you can spread the word about Earth Hour, plus creative things to do when the lights go out in case you need inspiration!

We want the US to turn out more lights than any other country in the world during this historic event so please pass this note along to anyone you think might want to take part. Let's all turn out and take action on March 28 at 8:30 pm.

Thanks!

Spread the earth word ... NOT the icing!
Janice

Starfield during Earth Hour

The Moon, Stars, & ISS During Earth Hour

At the beginning of Earth Hour, look for an extremely thin crescent moon in the western sky about 20 degrees above the horizon. At the end of Earth Hour, at 9:30 p.m., the stars in the southeast sky will look like this scene (right), with Orion prominent and the bright star Sirius down and to the left of the three Belt Stars. Click the image to enlarge.

Then, in the final minute of Earth Hour, look to the northwest. From Michiana you can see the International Space Station (ISS) rise in the NW at 9:30 p.m. and climb up to almost 40 degrees of altitude in the NNE. Approaching the handle of the Big Dipper in the NE, the ISS will fade out as it enters the shadow of the earth at 9:32 p.m. (see background starfield). With its new solar panel also reflecting the sun, it should be a brilliant spectacle (weather permitting) as it passes over the Great Lakes (see ISS ground track).
