"For this reason they (the Celts) measure periods of time not by days but by
nights; and in celebrating birthdays, the first of the month, and new year’s
day, they go on the principle that the day begins at night." (Julius Caesar,

at Tara
- like last year but more low key , the flame is being lit at Tlachtga , the Hill of Ward
info about it here
Debbie and Donchadh ( spelling ? )
asked all to it when they came to speak at the Black Box event
a map to the Vigil is on the index
page of http://www.tarataratara.net/ ( tho the
site badly needs updating - )
and the phone no is 00353861758557
all would be very welcome - and Id be
going if I wasnt so arthritic - the Vigil folks are BRILLiant !
but it can be done
anywhere
the idea of it is to light a bonfire
- wherever you are - from the Tara flame
which itself is brought from Tlachtga
- the hill of ward see http://www.iolfree.ie/~tlachtga/
- which is where the first flame is
lit after all the fires have been extinguished on Samhain Eve
the flame is carried to Tara - and
then sent out in five ( i need to check this - directions )
ideally you go and fetch the flame -
or wait for a runner to bring it .......
or could just imagine that
...anyway , it makes the timing of the lighting of the bonfire fairly flexible -
as there is know knowing how fast the runner would be ; )
I dont know if anyone is organising
anything here - Im not - go ahead ! it doesnt have to be a big thing - just
puting the lights out for a while - then lighting a flame
could be a social event - could just
be done at home
anyway - thats the way it was done in
the Old Times - its Traditional - also somehow seems a good idea now - it
connects to the source and a load of lights coming out from the source to
lighten the darkness - great !
thanks for asking
computer ate the last newsletter and
I got disheartened - will give it another go - there is LOADS happening
regards
Anita

This
place is dedicated to the sacred fire. The
Celts divided their year into two halves. One begun on the first of May (Bealtinne).
While the other started on the First of November (Samhain). It
was here on the festival of Samhain that the sacred fire was kindled.
It was custom of the Druids to assemble on Tlachtga on the eve of Samhain
and that a fire was lit on which offerings were made.
This was a prelude to the Feast of Tara.
When the High Kings looked west this evening they could see the kindling
of the newly lit fires on Tlachtga (twelve miles away).
They knew then that all was well for another year.
The forces of death associated with winter were held at bay for another
year. All the fires in Ireland were quenched on this night and the men of Ireland were forbidden to relight them except from the fire of Tlachtga. The lighting of the scared fire was a solemn and weird ritual. This was the first day of winter and death was very close. The Fairy mounds were open on this night and the inhabitants were abroad. The spirits of the dead returned and appeared to men. It was a night of confusion and disorder where the boundaries between the living and the dead were obliterated. Man was powerless in the hands of fate. |
LAST YEAR
We will be lighting beacons at Tara and it's surrounding hills. Based
on an Ancient custom we ask that people join us by lighting Beacons of
Support on their nearest hill and watch the horizon for fires being lit
hill to hill in response. Please light your beacons in fire pits,
braziers or steel barrels up off the ground so as not to damage the
Land.

How we got George Bush URGENT News Bulletin: 10/28/08Melamine in US food supply - severe risk to childrenClick here for details: Melamine contamination widespread And he was never elected president. Not in 2000. Not in 2004. And the news media, Congress, and the Democratic Party have never even attempted to do anything about it. If you're living in America, that's the kind of country you're living in now. It's not a question of when or if we'll lose our democracy, it's been gone a long time. The only question is what we're going to do to get it back.
