MEATH COUNTY COUNCIL
Heritage Week

Calling all community groups!
Why not organise an event for Heritage Week 2008?

Is your group involved with a project, which promotes the heritage of Meath?
Would you like to take part in Heritage Week by holding an event in your area?
Heritage Week 2008 will run from Sunday August 24th to Sunday August 31st.

Last year almost 1000 events took place throughout the country, from guided walks, to living history displays, to music recitals and exhibitions. In Ireland Heritage Week is co-ordinated by the Heritage Council with support from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government

Registration forms will be available shortly from www.heritageweek.ie and Meath County Council Heritage Office 046-9097406

Heritage Week 2008:
Every year millions of Europeans visit historical monuments and sites throughout Europe on European Heritage Days. These are a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union in which over forty countries participate each year. The main aim of European Heritage Days are to promote awareness of our built, natural and
cultural heritage and to promote Europe's common cultural heritage.
In Ireland we celebrate European Heritage Days with a full week of
events throughout Heritage Week. Read more...

Hi all,
I think myself that a counter-event is a good idea. History, MMP/ rail/
beautiful sites, burials, literature/history/spiritual aspects. Tara is
not just archaeology - the NRA archaeologists and their apologists do
not have the right to write off the other aspects of our heritage.
We have enough time here to actually produce an event - nothing
spectacular or expensive ... talks, photo display, personal experience
of the last 2 years in particular or even the past 10 years from certain
people?

...or we organise a counter-event that is more 'positive' in that it sets out the history of Tara and the benefits of the Master Plan (and/or other transport alternatives). A protest can be a negative thing and counter-productive. Either way, two things are critical. One is where do you make your stand (Tara Hill Car Park? Customs House? Dáil Eireann, etc.?). Two, who does all the hard work? As we have found throughout this and other protests, it's the same small crew of people doing all the work, so before we suggest lots of work, who is willing and able to do it? I certainly have limited opportunities because of my work.
